Description
Lord Buddha is depicted in the earth touching gesture also know as
“calling the earth to witness”. This mudra represents the moment when
the Buddha, seated in the meditation under the Bodhi Tree on the eve of
enlightenment, is challenged by Mara (the Evil One) to prove that he
had given alms. At that point the Buddha touched the ground with his
right hand, asking the earth to bear witness to his good deeds in
previous existences. In response the earth quaked, causing Mara and his
hosts to flee. This mudra may also be referred to as maravijaya meaning
“victory over Mara.”
This wood sculpture is a one of a kind statue, hand carved by the very
talented artists of Cambodia. Every piece is truly unique!
